Classroom News
We have had quite a busy February and March so far. ISATs are now history for another year. The students worked so hard, and I am so proud of them.
Math
We will be finishing Unit 9 with the Unit test on March 26th. This unit covers fractions, decimals, percentages, figuring percent off discounts, and multiplying and dividing decimals. Remember, there is always a review session in class the day before the test, and I am once again having an extra review for any students who feel they need further clarification. It will be in my room at 8:30 on Wednesday, March 25th.
Our next math unit will focus on lines of reflections, lines of symmetry, positive and negative numbers. We will start this after Spring Break.
Reading
We have been focusing on Fantasy writing in Reading (as well as with our March book report which is due March 25th). We have been discussing Tall Tales, Fables, Fairy Tales, and Folk tales. The kids really seem to be enjoying these "larger than life" stories of Paul Bunyan, Mike Fink, John Henry, the Swamp Angel, and Library Lil. This also ties nicely into our Writing unit.
Writing
In Writing, we have been immersing ourselves in various Fairy Tales and discussing what the necessary elements of a Fairy Tale are. The students have now chosen a fairy tale that they will re-write into a Fractured Fairy tale. Remember those, parents, from Saturday morning TV? These will be stories similar to the relatively famous fractures fairy tale of "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs". The final copy of these will be due on March 24th, and while most students will finish them in the time allowed each day in class, I do know from experience that some students will need to work on them at home.
Science
We have had a busy couple of months with science between our Owl Pellet dissections, studying plants and growing our terrariums, and our study during ISAT week of crickets. We still have a few crickets that I am hoping will hang on until it is warm enough to let them go outside. We are now switched back to Social Studies.
Social Studies
We are in the middle of our big Illinois unit right now. On Friday, we had the "Illinois Man" in showing us his fantastic slide show of our great state that has been 20 years in the making. The students really enjoyed his presentation and had some great questions for him. As we continue to study Illinois, we will be looking at interesting places in our home state to visit. Students will research places to go and choose one for which they and a partner will "produce" a commercial. These will be finished and ready to share Friday, March 27th. Again, students will be given ample time to research, choose a place, write the few lines of the commercial necessary and choose pictures to go with it. It will all be done on Photo Story on the computers -- the kids will love it.
I am in the process of trying to update my email list for parents. If you wouldn't mind emailing me at lynne_ouellette@ipsd.org so that I can update my files, I would greatly appreciate it.
Remember, THINK SPRING!!!!!!!

It is getting cooler now, but students still go outside for recess. So, please make sure to send a jacket with them each day.
Parents, please remind students to bring a water bottle to school each day. Even though it is getting cooler, we still get quite thirsty during the day and can't be missing class time to go to the drinking fountain.
